Chesterton Academy of Greater Hartford

Faith and reason meet in every class

A NEW CLASSICAL HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDED IN THE CATHOLIC FAITH

The mission of Chesterton Academy of Greater Hartford is to help parents raise up a new generation of joyful leaders and saints, educated in the classical tradition and the truths of the Catholic faith. We make it our mission to prepare our students to triumph over the materialism and despair that pervade our culture and to accept our Lord's offer to have life and have it abundantly. Our rigorous, integrated classical curriculum combines a broad, liberal arts education with a strong emphasis on the development of Christian virtues and an appreciation of beauty. Through our Three Pillars Model, we form intellect, character, and spirituality.

Catholic Identity

Catholicism is central to our mission. For this reason, every school day begins with Mass. We teach theology from the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and papal documents. Other important ways we live the faith include annual pilgrimages and retreats, modest and wholesome extracurricular activities, and sacred art and crucifixes adorning the hall and the classrooms.

Classical Curriculum

Faith and reason meet in every class. Students at a Chesterton Academy enjoy a cohesive, content-rich education, with an emphasis on developing critical thinkers. A broad exposure to many different disciplines helps students recognize and interact with the complex wonder of the world.

The Chesterton Academy model begins with a classical, integrated curriculum. History, literature, philosophy, and theology are braided together. The sciences and the humanities are intimately connected so that the logic of math is seen in philosophy, and God’s handiwork is visible in the sciences. Each year builds on the previous one so that by the end of senior year, we celebrate articulate, clear-thinking, well-rounded, and, very importantly, joyful human beings.

Student Life

A robust faith community, our mission is to prepare students to triumph over the materialism and despair that pervade our culture and to accept our Lord’s offer to have life and have it abundantly. We encourage athletics and extra-curricular activities as a way of fostering this fullness of life.

Student life is grounded in Catholic Identity. It is nurtured by Chesterton Academy’s House System, which is drawn from the 1,000 year-old tradition of Christian education exemplified in the colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. The Houses provide real, tangible community within the larger school. Clubs and Activities will take shape to meet the needs and interests of our students. And there is a real vision for Athletics. As a new school, we look forward to building an athletic program based on what our enrolled students and families want.

Fine Arts

Equal emphasis is given to the arts so that every student learns to draw and paint, sing in the choir, act on the stage, give speeches, and engage in debate. The influence of the arts in today’s society cannot be overstated, and this is why art is mandatory at Chesterton Academy all four years.

Hallmarks of a Chesterton Education

An Incarnational Environment

From history and theology to math and science, the Incarnation is the central mystery we explore across the entire curriculum. It is our desire that each student would personally experience the Incarnation.

Rediscovering the Lost Tools of Learning

Our curriculum is centered on skills seemingly forgotten in our modern society - reading, writing, oral presentations, and the development of critical reasoning skills through logic and philosophy.

A Focus on Truth, Goodness, and Beauty

Our classical curriculum combines a broad, liberal arts education with a strong emphasis on the development of Christian virtues and an appreciation of beauty.

The Socratic
Seminar

The Socratic seminar is perhaps the oldest educational tool. Through this method a teacher imparts knowledge through directed questions and guided dialogue, bringing ideas and knowledge to life.

A Joyful Learning Environment

Students experience the joy of community and the discovery process, providing them with an opportunity to live out their spiritual lives in an atmosphere of joy and fun.

The Wit and Wisdom of G.K. Chesterton

With an emphasis on Christian joy, students experience a faith-filled community and the discovery process, providing them with an opportunity to live out their spiritual lives in an authentically joyful atmosphere.
